Septic pump systems are complex; when your system fails, it can be difficult for the untrained eye to find the source of the failure. Messick Plumbing’s technicians are experienced at diagnosing septic pump problems and providing efficient solutions to get your septic pump up and running quickly. Call us about our septic pump service at the first sign of trouble with your system.

What is that alarm suddenly sounding off? If it’s your septic pump alarm, you need to act.

When the alarm sounds indicating a problem with your ejector or sewage grinder pump, there are a few immediate steps to take to reduce the potential of a sewage backup in your home: Don’t use your water – That means don’t flush your toilets or run your faucets; turn off your washing machine and dishwasher, too.

  • Disengage the alarm – There should be a lighted button or red “off” switch on the alarm box that, when engaged, will stop the alarm from sounding.
  • Call Messick Plumbing for fast service; we will troubleshoot the situation and quickly diagnose your septic problems.

How often should I have my septic system pumped?

Generally speaking, pumping your septic system every three to five years should be sufficient, but the actual frequency depends on how much water you are putting into your waste tank. You can judge the amount of water you are draining into your tank by the number of people in your home and their water usage – Do you take long showers or frequent baths? How often do you do laundry or run the dishwasher? The more water being drained into your septic tank, the more frequently your system should be pumped.

What should I do if sewage backs up into my house?

Avoid contact with the backup and call a professional in for the cleanup. They have the proper equipment and gear to protect against exposure to any harmful materials the sewage may contain. Once the backup has been cleared, thoroughly clean the flooded area. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends using a solution of 90% water and 10% bleach to disinfect the exposed area. Make sure the area is thoroughly dry for at least 24 hours before using it again.

How can I tell if I have a leak in my tank or sewer line?

Look at your lawn. A vibrantly green section of lawn surrounded by dead vegetation or an area that is an odd shade of green can be signs of a leak somewhere in your sewage system. Other signs would include puddles or raw sewage seeping from the ground.
