Does it seem like your water heater is not providing enough hot water for your home or business? Does it take too long for the water to heat up? Is your water giving off a foul odor? These are all indications that something may be wrong with your water heater.

A lack of pressure could be an indication of a leak, a sediment or calcium buildup, or inadequate pipe size which is common in older homes. A foul odor usually indicates there is bacteria accumulating in the tank. And, if it takes too long for the water to come up to temperature, that could indicate a problem with the heating element or the thermostat.

1. I suddenly have no hot water. What could be wrong with my water heater?  A number of things can account for your lack of hot water depending on whether you have an electric or gas water heater. With gas heaters, you need to check the gas flow and make sure your pilot light is lit. With electric heaters, the first thing to check is whether the circuit breaker has been tripped. A lack of hot water can also indicate an issue with your limit reset switch, which will trip when the water temperature gets too hot, or with your thermostat.

2. There are strange noises coming from my water heater. What do they mean?  If you hear popping, hissing, banging or knocking sounds coming from your water heater, you could have scale buildup on the heating elements or on the bottom of your tank. These noises could also mean there is a leak or too much pressure in the tank, or they could simply be the result of normal expansion and contraction. A hot water heater contractor can diagnose your problem and recommend the best course to fix it.

3. Why does it take so long for my hot water to heat up?  You probably have a problem with the heating elements or with the thermostat controlling your water heater. Over time, sediment from your water can build up on the heating elements causing them to fail. Depending on the condition of your water (hard vs. soft), this can happen sooner rather than later. Alternatively, your thermostat could be failing and need replacement.

A hot water heater is one of your most important appliances. It is used daily, with certain exceptions, yet it is often neglected. But when the water heater stops functioning as expected, we do notice. Call Messick Plumbing at (609) 466-7971 for same-day service of your hot water heater.
